Support for a healthy liver*

Our livers are exposed to a wide variety of environmental pollutants including herbicides, pesticides, and the toxins associated with sick building syndrome. Our livers need protection. Viral hepatitis has been a major human disease for at least two thousand years. The hepatitis virus is now estimated to affect 3.5 million people in the United States. Hepatitis C has only been detectable since 1989. Many liver diseases arise from infection by hepatotropic viruses (cirrhosis and liver cancer, to name two). There are also attacks on the liver from social drinking as well as alcohol abuse, and over-the-counter and prescription pharmaceuticals.

The liver-protective action of silymarin, the active ingredient in Milk Thistle, has been shown to work in chronic alcoholic liver disease and is able to improve liver functions in alcoholic patients. Results in many studies of silymarin show regeneration of liver cells and positive protection from acute viral hepatitis through major antioxidant and anti-peroxidative effects. The base of this formula, Chai Hu Tang, known in Japan as Sho-Saiko-To, is used by 90% of chronic hepatitis suffers to protect against cirrhosis and liver cancer. Japanese researchers have identified steroid-like ingredients, saikosaponins, that enhance the activity of cortisone and prevent adrenal atrophy.

Bupleurum, the chief herb in the formula, also displays non-steroidal anti-inflammatory activity and has been shown to potentiate prednisone. The Chinese and Ayurvedic herb, Andrographis, has been shown to slow the replication of viruses.
